A little flashback to a pre-pandemic trip to Los Angeles, in which my wife and I saw lots of cool things.

George Floyd Protest March

June 5, 2020 | ultimatemark_6g4owo

Live sketches from the June 3 protest march organized by students at San Francisco’s Mission High School. You want to be careful about mass gatherings in the pandemic era, but it’s an important cause. Good job, the youth of tomorrow!

For more about the protest and the amazing students who organized it, see this San Francisco Chronicle article.

Bone Bonanza

August 29, 2018September 29, 2021 | ultimatemark_6g4owo

It’s possible I may have been drawing a lot of skulls and skeletons recently. Since I live about ten minutes from the California Academy of Sciences, it’s an ongoing temptation.

January 28, 2018February 11, 2018 | ultimatemark_6g4owo

I just finished up the first of the animal drawing classes I’m running for the San Francisco Zoo. Titled “Savanna Sketching,” it focused on the hoofed animals and birds of the zoo’s African Savanna exhibit, and so I made a set of handouts for the students…

Here’s a downloadable PDF of the whole set. And two weeks from now, we’ll be visiting the South American tropical aviary for Aviary Art!

SF Women’s March 2018

January 22, 2018September 29, 2021 | ultimatemark_6g4owo

A selection of sketches from yesterday’s Women’s March in San Francisco. First, the initial rally at Civic Center; the quotes in the balloons are snippets from the speeches, although sadly I was too far in the back to see the actual speakers.

A Gift from the Sea

January 17, 2018September 29, 2021 | ultimatemark_6g4owo

Recently returned from sunny Baja California! Not much drawing to show for myself, but I did find a couple of perfect molted crab shells amid the tidepools…

Pterror of the Pterosaurs!

July 12, 2017January 17, 2018 | ultimatemark_6g4owo

I’ve been looking forward to the traveling Pterosaurs exhibit at the Academy of Sciences all year! And indeed, it was so pteriffic that it’s taken me three visits to draw all the wingtastic displays.

And now for round two!

I saved the best and biggest for last.
